This is my daughter, Leaura, on the left. She’s 29 years old and is a manager in food service. When I was 6 months pregnant with her, I was told to abort her because of a genetic condition. I was sent to Dartmouth Medical Center in New Hampshire for review and diagnosis. Their geneticists told me with such a high result, it could only mean 1 of 2 things, major heart deformity or massive spinabifida.
Spinabifida was ruled out after an comprehensive ultrasound, so she was thought to have a huge hole in her heart. I was told she wouldn’t live much past birth. I decided not to abort, that she would be born and take her rightful place. Two months later she survived premature birth. There was no hole, and she was born perfectly healthy! We were only held in the hospital for 4 days. After we were released to go home she not only survived, but she thrived! Today she is a healthy happy adult, and I’m thankful that I didn’t listen to the doctors who wanted me to end her life before it began.
